Reunion

My favorite part about coming home twice a year (besides the family time) is being able to see my old high school friends. Everyone's spread all over the country, and it's great to catch up. I wish I got to see them a lot more often, but I suppose that distance makes the heart grow fonder. Some of these people have been my friends for as long as I've lived in Eden Prairie. Diane was my first friend when I moved here at age 10.

Now most of us are working elsewhere or in grad school. Anant has an interview at Duke coming up! Diane is in her last year. Steven and Andrew are working in NYC while Pritika and Alyssa are in Ann Arbor.

Everyone is doing well and seemingly happy, and I'm so glad to see that our lives have improved significantly since high school. I wonder what our 10-year reunion will bring. :)

The End and the Beginning

While Dan was here, my part-time job was annoying enough to schedule me for a 6-hour shift when Dan's trip was only 48 hours. Lame, right? Courtney was sweet enough to cover my shift last minute... To thank her, I took her out to lunch in Eastern Market. We went to Ted's Bulletin.

Split a chocolate milkshake...

I got this fruit + veggie salad... and it SUCKED. You can probably tell based on the way it looks. But yeah. It was awful. The strawberries were super sour, and the vegetables just didn't look or taste at all fresh.
I should have gotten a burger. (Courtney brought her own cayenne pepper. Hee-larious.)
Later that day, I went for a run... and booked it 4 miles around the Capitol. I was putting out 8-minute miles! (I happened to be in a rush to get over to a debate watch party...I was late.) But I just had to pause a second to take a picture of this awesome fall weather.
Hit up Plaka Grill beforehand to get some gyro-licious noms before sitting back and watching our Prez, Obama, kill it in the foreign policy arena.
Before he left for his trip, Amtchat had made a jar of shrimp. I was given express instructions to dispose of them on his behalf, so Anna and I split them and did some pre-lunch munching.
And for dinner, I made another trip to Amsterdam Falafel (third time this week!) bringing another friend who had yet to experience this place.  Ohhh so good! I also managed to catch Argo after dinner. If you haven't seen it, I would recommend it. It'll be on the Oscar board for sure.
Wednesday was my last day at the Forest Service.  The moms brought some baked goods: pumpkin spice loaf and brownies.  :) So sweet... I'm going to miss my Forest Service family.
Our intern coordinator, Sheryl, took a couple of us out to lunch that day, too.  We four ladies ended up at McCormick & Schmick's.  Everyone felt that a good break from the work day was in order, especially given the recent death of a friend that Sheryl had just learned about an hour prior. :(
We split a couple St. Louis ribs...

We also got some calamari with banana peppers and sweet potato chips. Those banana peppers were great breaded and fried! Who knew? I ordered red rice and beans with some sausage and fish (that was a LOT of food), and each of us also ordered a cocktail.
Mango sorbet :)
Add to the mix a relaxing yoga session at my favorite studio (Meridian Yoga), and I'd call it a great last day.  Now I just have two days of nothingness, and my new job begins!
To celebrate, I spent a night out with my buddy Venu.  We roamed around town stopping at my favorite locale (Churchkey) in addition to a new bar on U Street that had opened sometime in the last two weeks (Satellite Bar-- they have adult milkshakes!), and we ended our night at The Coupe (woo, 24-hour diners near my house are a great addition to the neighborhood).
I ordered a banh mi. I don't know what I was expecting. The pork belly was good, but the bread was all wrong. >_< It needs to be a crusty baguette! Oh well. I just really really craved banh mi I guess. :( There's another place in Silver Spring that has these foot long banh mis for $3 each and 6 for $15. I NEED TO GO BACK and stock up!
Thursday brought the arrival of my new running shoes.  They are beauuuuutiful :) I'm waiting for a good opportunity to toss my current ones. I know you're technically only supposed to put a couple hundred miles on them, but my shoes LOOK ok, so I'm not really sure what the mileage is at this point.
I had a couple errands to get to downtown, so I used a Scoutmob deal at Cafe Carvey to get this roasted turkey and avocado sandwich. :) It also had cranberry sauce on it. Mmm.
Lotta meeaaaaat. Afterwards, I went to a a Starbucks to do a little work, and then I went home.
Met up with my other buddy Jake in Adams Morgan later in the evening. I don't know why, but I was so tired! So I only stayed for an east coast minute then went home.
 Breakfast Friday: Whole Foods!
Also scored some free muscle milk. I'll save these for a rushed breakfast or post-workout snack. I remember a time when we used to get these for free every day we had a weight training workout. Then Coach Kipp told us we couldn't drink them anymore because we were getting fat. Sigh.
In the evening, I met up with one of my USFS mentors for a drink and some food up in the Doubletree Skydome in Arlington.  We chatted, watched the sun go down, and spun around a few times.
 Mm. Cherry cocktails.
 Quesadillas.
 Crab burger!
Aaaaand a nighttime view of the city. :) I love my new home!
In the evening, I met up with the boys and we hit up Clarendon Ballroom for some Halloween fun.  Hilarious costumes.
I especially loved Pat's penguin costume!!! I'M GOING TO BORROW THIS SOON. Happy Early Halloweeeen!!!

Eat Eat Eat

Dan is back in town visiting for the weekend, and I brought him to go get some falafel brunch before our late afternoon frisbee games...
This place is awesome. Back for more at Amsterdam Falafel!
Mmmm...
Brought my tupperware...got some fries, too. I really like the fries here, but Dan was less impressed. I like a good crisp-on-the-outside golden hot fry.
Then... frisbee! We played two games this day. We lost our first and won our second... :(
And for dinner, Dan and I went to AGAINN to celebrate me getting a job!  I had the most delicious halibut...
And Dan ordered a lamb pot pie. (I liked mine better.) Such buttery flakey fish... Swoon.
The next morning, we walked to Commissary for brunch, but during the wait, I got some sorbet from Pitango. Raspberry and chocolate noir sorbets... the best. And since it's sorbet not gelato, it didn't make me unnecessarily full before brunch.

Braised beef with BBQ hollondaise benedict. Omgah. Dericious.
The huevos rancheros were much less impressive.
We took a walk...
Ate some salad (Cafe Tu-O-Tu!), and man this place didn't skimp on the avocado!
We walked over to Churchkey and had some beers...
and wings... Churchkey has some pretty great wings, but they are a tad expensive.
And we stopped by Whole Foods for dinner! They had this great butternut squash (woohoo Fall!) kind of casserole.
Welp. It's Sunday. Dan and I wrapped it up and had him shipped off to the airport, and I'm about to start my last week at the Forest Service. Changes are a-coming!
